GP Patient Survey
About the survey
The GP Patient Survey is an independent survey run by Ipsos on behalf of NHS England. The survey is sent out to over two million people registered with GP practices in England. The results show how people feel about their GP practice.
What the Survey Covers
- Accessing care: How easy or difficult it is to get through on the phone, book appointments, and use online services.
- Quality of care: The trust patients have in healthcare professionals, and how well they listen and involve patients in decisions.
- Out-of-hours services: Experiences of NHS services when the local GP practice is closed.
- Other services: Patient views on local NHS dentistry and pharmacy services.
- General health: Background questions regarding long-term physical or mental health conditions and support.
How It Works
- Participants: Every year, paper and online questionnaires are sent to a random selection of roughly 2.5 million adults (aged 16 and over) registered with a GP practice in England.
- Voluntary: Participation is completely voluntary and confidential.
- Period cover: It runs between January and March.
- Data Release: Results are published publicly at national, regional, and individual GP practice levels. You can explore past data and specific practice results through the https://gp-patient.co.uk/
Why It Matters
The NHS and local health systems use the results to identify areas where primary care needs improvement. Individual GP surgeries review their specific feedback to shape local action plans, improve appointment booking systems, and enhance overall patient care.
